Do you listen to music while you work?
What do you listen to?
Does your mind drift to daydreaming while you work?
Personally, when I am doing animation, I cannot stand listening to anything. I concentrate.
I never had the habit of having earphones plugged into my ears listening to whatever music when I am animating. I used to do that when I was still working as a draftsman. But now that I am in animation, I just can’t work that way.
That is especially true when my scene involves dialogues. I need to hear the sound track to get a feel of what the scene is like and what the character is trying to convey. That will not be possible if I am hearing something else.
Which is why I am sometimes amazed at, when I was still working in a studio environment, how some of my co-workers could manage to work with Heavy Metal music blaring out of their earphones.
That is lack of manners to me, by the way. If you are listening to an iPod in public or in the office or in a classroom, please turn it down. You might like it that you are slowly damaging your eardrums, but honestly, hearing those tinny, minute sounds from those tiny earphones are very irritating to some people, especially to me for that matter. Sort of like an invasion of my own public space. Feel free to blare away in the privacy of your own room!
Whoops, now what could have caused me to turn all grouchy back there? Back to the topic, man.
I don’t have the need to listen to classical music or what not to get me in the mood when I am animating. I just sit there and concentrate.
Doing posing, on the other hand, is a different matter. Since there is not much concentration involved, I am free to listen to anything. I usually listen to Podcasts that I downloaded in iTunes. Mostly they are technology related. I have the Art of War audiobook there too, which I listen to at least once every two months. Oh, I may be replaying it a lot, but I still have not memorized it.
I have purchased a couple of albums in iTunes, but I rarely play them while I do posing. A strange turn-around from a once avid radio listener. Oh, I do not rip songs, I buy them. I don’t want to go into a debate about piracy and all, but that is just the way I feel about digital music: I do not torrent them because that is illegal. The same goes with my choice of buying licensed software instead of getting bootlegged copies.
Hold on, that is way off topic now.
Now, when I am animating, I frequently fall into my habit of drifting into daydreaming. In fact, I daydream a lot. I daydream when I am driving the car alone. I daydream when I am sitting somewhere waiting for someone to finish shopping. I day dream when I am sitting on the throne. I daydream even if I am watching TV!
Just random work habits, thanks for reading!
