Photo Of The Day

My share for the day, a light fixture and some Christmas lanterns, or Parols, in the background that were up for sale at a local restaurant here in Calgary:

Lamp and Lanterns

Another, this time inspired by an article about taking images of textures:

Manhole Texture

Have to do some work related stuff before I can get back to my short animation. Until then, have a nice day!

Train Ride

Took a break from doing my short animation by taking the bus and the train to downtown Calgary with my wife and mom. I’ve always wanted to play around with the shutter speed settings of my camera. Though the shot is not that original, I am very happy with it:

Train Station

I could have taken more photos during our walk around the city center, but for some strange reason I got so paranoid about pulling my camera out of my bag and felt a bit awkward with the camera hanging around my neck like I am some kind of tourist. I did took some shots of us and they are in my Smug Mug page, but I was hoping I could take some that are more creative and what not for my Flickr. Hmmm, maybe next time.

Have a nice day!

Nothing to Shoot?

“There’s nothing for me to shoot, there aren’t anything interesting here.”

“Others are lucky; they live in more interesting places than where I am at right now.”

“If I only have a better lens and camera, I can probably shoot just like them…”

I am so guilty of these excuses!

Those words up there, by the way, are some of the introductory sentences from an article I stumbled upon written by David Tong. The article can be read here.

Thanks to people like David Tong for providing such wonderful inspiration to novice photographers like me!

My share for today I call “Oil in the Dark”:

I miss work. I love having free time between projects but I just can’t wait to get back to my work routine:

In Action

I miss my 12 hour plus, 7 days a week schedule.

I miss waking up early in the morning to get back to work.

I miss listening to my regular Podcasts.

I miss working with my gear:

I wonder if I will feel the same way once work comes flooding in again?

Night Photography.

I am having a great time enjoying my short vacation in between projects. I get to rest and at the same time practice some photography.

The camera I have right now, the Nikon D300, is a great camera to use, especially for low light photography. Last night, I had a chance to run it through its paces once more as we had dinner at the Calgary Tower, a landmark in downtown Calgary.

It was too late in the evening to take a photo of the tower itself so the only shot I had was from the restaurant high above the ground:

Downtown Calgary Nightscape

The food was great but it was too dark in the dining room of the restaurant to get a decent shot. The only one I got was from my drink:

Iced Tea

The dark lighting in the restaurant sort of dulled my enthusiasm to take more photos. The presentation of the food was great, but I had no light to work with. Maybe next time we will go there when the sun is still up.

Towards The Sun.

My Photo Share for the day.

Towards The Sun:

Towards The Sun

In a not so short while, Winter will finally be back. It would be a treat to see these wonderful animals migrating en masse to escape once again. Since it is still too early for that, I had to settle for this early traveling fellow.

Have a nice day!

I may have mentioned before that my Mom is here visiting me in Calgary. She’s due to go back to our home country, the Philippines, soon but I have been adamant in asking her to extend her stay until January of next year. The reason is that I wanted her to experience her very first Winter in another country. I wanted her to witness snow.

I’ve raved about before how I love snow and the Winter time. Call me mad, but I just love it! Since arriving in Calgary three years ago I’ve been looking forward to the very first snow fall of the coming Winter.

Last night, we had some continuous snow flurries, the very first snow fall, so to speak. It lasted long enough during the night that when we woke up this morning, almost everything was covered with white, wet snow. It was the perfect opportunity for my mom to go out and see for herself what snow looks like:

Mom and Snowball

Admittedly, this snow fall is mild compared to what normally is considered as a real snow fall here in Calgary. But what the hey, it’s my Mom’s first time to see it, so we took some photos of her with her very first roughly-fashioned snow ball!

There will surely be more photo opportunity in the following weeks as Winter slowly creeps in. I can’t wait to see the expression on her face once she experience some real, heavy, knee-high snow.

I hope I will not be branded as a cruel son by asking her to stay longer and experience the Calgary Winter; I just wanted to share with her the child-like joy and wonder that I felt when I saw my very own first snow fall.

Photo Of The Day.

My share for the day, a fence post from a preserved patch of land:

Gloomy Fence

I was hoping to get some photos last halloween but something humorous happened that caused me to miss out on it.

This year’s halloween was the first time that we stayed home as on the two previous years, we would stay over at my sister-in-law’s place instead. As we are relatively new here in Canada, my wife and I were clueless to how many candies to buy and give away come trick-or-treat time so we would avoid staying at home and go to her more experienced relative instead to get an idea on how this popular tradition is played out.

Now that we have an idea, we elected to brave it out this year’s halloween and stay home and experience it ourselves. To make sure we don’t embarrass ourselves by running out of treats, we bought a lot of candies. As the light started to fade, we then excitedly waited for the trick-or-treaters to come ring our doorbell any moment. I even had my camera all set up to take pictures!

Well, what do you know, we did not even had one single knock on the door! Apparently, there were not that many kids in our community and if there were, they would pack up and go somewhere else to go trick-or-treating.

We ended up with a lot of un-handed out candies that, so as not go to waste, we ourselves consumed over the weekend. Oh well, so much for being afraid of those bus-loads of trick-or-treaters. Maybe we’ll have better luck next halloween!
